🤔 The Opinion of Ed & Serenity


From The Adventures of Ed and Serenity, we’ve sailed enough to see both sides of this change — and honestly, we believe Carnival could have handled this transition better.
We understand why they felt pressure to change the program. When Platinum and Diamond ranks swell in size, perks get diluted and lines get longer. Something needed adjustment.


But here’s where we feel the misstep happened:
Platinum should have remained lifetime status. Many cruisers were working toward Platinum under the promise that once earned, it was permanent. Changing that core expectation understandably upset loyal guests.
They could have added additional tiers. Instead of removing lifetime benefits, Carnival could have:
Added a new tier between Platinum and Diamond
Increased the number of required nights for top levels
Created an ultra-elite level above Diamond
They could have made levels harder to achieve instead of temporary.
There were options — many options — that would have preserved the goodwill built over decades.
Instead, the shift to a rolling two-year qualification cycle left many long-time cruisers feeling maligned rather than aligned with the brand they’ve championed for years.


As frequent cruisers, we don’t object to modernization. Loyalty programs evolve. But loyalty is a two-way street. When guests spend years building toward something described as “lifetime,” taking that permanence away naturally feels like a broken promise.
Now, with that perspective shared, let’s break down the full details of the old and new programs.


* The Old Program: VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club
For many years, Carnival’s loyalty system was known as the VIFP Club, a straightforward and cruise-night-based rewards system.

Earn 1 point per cruise night sailed
Status based strictly on lifetime cruise nights
Once you reached a tier, you kept it for life

Why Carnival Changed the Program
Over time, the upper tiers — especially Platinum and Diamond — grew significantly. This meant:

The New Program: Carnival Rewards

💬 Final Thoughts from Ed & Serenity
Change isn’t always bad. In fact, parts of Carnival Rewards are exciting — especially the ability to redeem points more flexibly.
But loyalty programs are built on trust.
For us, the biggest disappointment isn’t modernization — it’s that Carnival could have preserved loyalty while adjusting exclusivity. Adding tiers. Raising thresholds. Creating an ultra-elite level. Protecting Platinum permanently.
Instead, the move to expiring status altered the emotional contract many guests believed they had with the brand.
We’ll keep sailing. We love cruising. But like many longtime guests, we’ll be watching closely to see how Carnival proves that loyalty still matters just as much as spending.
